10th Blog Birthday and Life Update

Hi everyone. I am sitting here writing this post now, listening to the fireworks going off in the distance, feeling quite sad and disappointed.  Today is once again my Blog Birthday and it is actually the tenth year!  I always thought years ago, that if I ever managed to keep my blog going for this length of time, I would do such a great post and a big giveaway to celebrate having my blog for 10 years!  But sadly, I haven't really been able to keep my blog going, not like I used to, because the last few years I have barely been posting.  And I do wonder, does anyone even read blogs anymore?!

I used to love writing my posts so much, I put so much effort into each and every one.  I loved taking and editing the photos and would spend hours on it, and for many years I posted every single week.  But life changed, things got difficult and hard and even though I really wanted to keep it going, it just never did.  Like I wrote a while back, I will try not to ever actually close the site or delete my blog, so it will still be here for anyone to read, including myself and I will post some times, just because I do love to write and hope that someone out there might still take the time to read it.

I hope to be able to write some more positive posts but at the moment, my depression has taken a big nosedive and I'm not doing too good.  I'm not happy at all with my life and I feel like I'm drowning with the grief of losing my Dad a year ago.

On the plus side, and two of the only things that have really been a positive in my life is that one, I have been learning a language.  Which is something I didn't even think I was capable of as I was chronically terrible at learning French at school.  I even got a U in a French test!!  But thankfully, I do seem to be learning well with my new chosen language, which I've been learning for nearly a year now.  And what is the language you may ask!  I am learning Finnish :-)  It is quite complex but a beautiful language.  I've also been learning a lot about Finland and the Finnish culture.  Maybe I'll do a post about it one day, if anyone is interested.

The second interest that has kept me sane this past 7-8 months, is my new music account, called @music2heal.my.soul and it is on both Instagram and Tiktok.  After I re-found all my favourite music and favourite bands near the beginning of last year.  I have mentioned this in more detail in my last post, which you can read here, Making Changes.
I love my little place on the internet, whether it's posting on my blog or spending time making lyric videos and posting on my music accounts.  And I want to keep doing these things, because it gives me pleasure and gives me something nice to focus on, as well as great happiness when I know it makes others smile too.

If you are one of my original followers, I thank you from the bottom of my heart for sticking with me, and if you're new here and managed to read this far (I am known for writing loooong posts), then again, thank you.

Until Next Time, whenever that may be.  Stay Cool and Be Yourself

Making Changes

Hi everyone, I have had my blog for 9 and a half years now and it saddens me that years ago, I would spend hours on my blog and post every single week (sometimes twice a week), without fail but now as you may have noticed, I have barely added more than a handful of posts for the past few of years.  Life has never been easy but the past few years have been quite awful and far too much to cope with, including nearly losing my Mum because she got so ill a couple of years ago.  I would have loved to sit and relax and just work on blog posts but sadly there was never a chance to do that.

When my Dad became ill near the beginning of last year, everything started to change; I had to take on a lot more responsibilities and had far less time to myself.  Then when he passed away last October, so many more things changed, my daily life changed, my priorities changed, I changed as a person.

I have also discovered over the past year, that I have ADHD - this has really opened my eyes and made me understand so much more about myself.  I'm so glad that I found out because for the first time in my life I finally feel like I'm not to blame for all the things I forget to do or can't concentrate on, for the way I think and feel about things and so much more.  But on the flip side, grieving for my Dad has been hard enough but having a condition like ADHD has made it even harder to cope with and has very much flared up all of my symptoms, both mentally and physically.

On the plus side to all this, I seem to have rediscovered myself; what I like, how I want to be seen, what type of person I am etc.  I realised that for many, many years, I've been wearing a mask and trying very hard to fit in by being someone I'm not.  I feel like I have a new sense of myself now, I am more focused on my goals, I've added new ones and changed others to fit in more with what I'm into now.  I've changed the way I am with people, the type of music I listen to and even what I wear.

One of these personal changes, has been getting back into music.  It was always a massive passion in my life, I used to sing all the time, I was studying Performing Arts at collage and I used to write a lot of songs.  But after I left college just over 20 years ago, other things in life took priority and the goal to be a singer fell into the background.  My musical tastes changed and became more mainstream, I stopped singing as much, then not at all and I gave up on writing too.

It wasn't until my Dad got ill in February last year, that I just desperately needed something to help me get through it, to cope with it all.  So I decided to start listening to a lot of my favourite bands and albums from when I was at my happiest, back when I was a Goth at collage.  So out came all my Linkin Park cds, Evanescence, Love Metal by HIM (an incredible album!) and finally one of my favourite albums of all Dead Letters by The Rasmus.  I then found out that this band was still going and had released 7 other albums which I purchased straight away and learnt every song within about 2 months!  I haven't stopped listening to my favourite bands since then, every day because I soon realised music was the only thing that really made me feel alive, happier and calmer, just like it used to, and like I can cope better.  On top of that, it made me want to start singing again, and now I practice every day.  I've even started to write again too!  I know at my age, it's too late for me to have the music career I always wanted 20 years ago but I still love to sing so much and I do it just to make me happier now.

When I first decided to write this post, it was going to basically be, me saying goodbye to my blog and letting you guys know why I wasn't going to be posting anymore.  But whilst writing it, I've basically remembered how much I love doing it!  So here's the plan. . . Oh and if you've actually made it this far (because this was going to be a short post but as always, it's turned into War and Peace), thank you and please do keep reading, I promise I will get to the point, eventually!

- So the future plan for my blog now is, I'm just going to write whatever the heck I feel like talking about, whenever I feel like posting anything.  No set days for posting, because let's face it I will not stick to it and I don't want to be compartmentalized or labelled as being a certain type of blogger or only writing about one or two topics.  I have so many interests and these days I have so many other things I want to be able to write about instead of the boring old-style posts of 'What's in my handbag' or 'Top 5 lipsticks', like I used to!  I want to write about my ADHD and all the crazy things I've found out about it and myself.  I want to write about my shop that I run, that not that many people (especially my blog followers) know about.  And about my favourite music and show you my very different style of outfits that I was too nervous to wear before.  I now embrace the fact that I'm different; a neurodivergent rock chick who is sick of trying to 'fit in' just to be seen as normal and be accepted.  I am Me again and I am so much happier and more confident for it.

Once again, I also want to say a massive thank you if you are an original follower of my blog, thank you SO much for staying with me all these years.  I really, really appreciate it and to any new comers, hi and welcome!

You can now also find me on IG and TikTok @music2heal.my.soul which is my new music accounts.  I absolutely love them.  I post quite regularly and post about my favourite bands, amazing songs that I feel everyone should hear, my own lyric video edits, music memes, basically anything to do with the type of music I love.  I hope to also upload videos of me singing at some point but I do need to pluck up a bit more courage first!

So until next time, whenever that may be, Stay Cool

9th Blog Birthday & Life Update

Hi everyone, well, it's been a while hasn't it, apologies for that!  Unfortunately, life as usual, has not gone to plan at all again this year and it's been a very difficult one in many ways.

In the middle of February this year my father was taken into hospital after feeling quite ill for several days.  Little did we know that over the course of the next 8 months, he would become even iller and be in and out of hospital, mostly in.
All while myself and my mum were trying to manage at home, coping with problems that he would usually have dealt with.  Coping with doing daily jobs that he would usually have done, as both my mum and I have ill health (as some of you may know from reading my older posts).  To say it's been a struggle and exhausting and stressful, is an extreme understatement.  I have also had another round of counselling during this time, but I will write about that separately.  If you want to read about my counselling experiences from my last round of sessions, you can do that
here.

After everything my father had been through while in hospital, (I won't go into details), we fully expected him to be on the mend as much as possible and even come home or at least go into a care home, as his health was never going to be very good again.  But sadly, after suddenly going downhill over a couple of days, on the 11th of October he passed away..

As you can imagine, this has been a massive blow and extremely hard to deal with.  It's been just over 3 weeks as I post this but feels like only a few days.  It's a real shock to the system.  Some days I feel I'm coping, other days I feel like I'm drowning in tears.  Thankfully I have some amazing friends around that have really been a great support and my mum and I are doing our best to help each other through this terrible time.

Today is my blogs 9th birthday and I would usually always do a giveaway, but hopefully this year you will understand why I have decided not to.  I will try and do one for you all just before Christmas instead.
Once again, thank you so much for staying with me over the years and I hope to write and get back into more of a routine soon, as I do have several posts in mind.

Bye for now

Life Update & New Year Changes

Happy New Year!

I hope you all had a good Christmas, or break from work/school etc, or had fun celebrating in whatever way you do.  I'm sad to say that I have very much neglected my little corner of the internet this past year and I do hope to write more in the future.  My excuse is that I have had an extremely busy year, working on my business, which I will tell you all about very soon.

I am glad to say, that I've had a very productive year and for the most part I've enjoyed the whole process.  On the down side; if you read my posts all about the counselling I had last year, you will know that I suffer with bad bouts of depression and despite the counselling helping a great deal in many ways and feeling a lot better afterwards - this year I took a massive step backwards and my depression has been very difficult, to the point of being too anxious to leave my house for the past 21 months, yes really!  I may write more about that at some point.  So this is definitely something I want to work on and try and improve this coming year.

However this post, as well as being a mini life-update, is about the whole expectations of a 'new year'.

People say, "new year, new start or "new year, new me"".  New year is the perfect time to start that diet, or start exercising more, start reading or flossing more.  Why not take up a new hobby or learn a new skill.  Be more productive or finally quite a bad habit.

My questions is - !!WHY WAIT!!

Why wait for that clock to strike midnight to change bad habits or be more positive.  Why not start now!  Start when you as an individual feel ready.  You could get up next Wednesday morning or even suddenly in an evening, and decide to start reading books, or cycling, etc!  Whatever you want to do, for YOU.

In 2020 right in the middle of June, I decided to chance two massive life choices, and I am SO glad I did as it paved the way for my fresh start!

Why make these type of changes on this one specific day just because it's traditional and expected!  Be You.  Change if and when YOU want to, whenever YOU want to.

Ok rant over :-)
Until Next Time Stay Happy

2020 My Year In Review

Hi everyone, for many people this year has been the worst year of their life and that is trully terrible.  But honestly for me, it's been the first year in my life I've really felt I've achieved something.  For me this year has been a chance to reflect, to focus on what's important, what I want from life and my goals and to actually start working towards my goals, which is something I've been putting off for years!

Being someone with a health condition and living with chronic pain, the most I ever normally went out was once a week.  So apart from desperately missing seeing my 2 best friends, I haven't felt too much of a hardship not going out and the extra time I've spent indoors has made all the difference to the work I've put in on my goals and I've already seen the rewards.

So to explain in more detail; firstly on January the 10th we welcomed our second furbaby.  A rescue teacup poodle (teacup is the smallest size there is) and she is SO tiny!! We named her Lucy and she has been an absolute joy and makes me smile everyday 😍

In June I was FINALLY able to talk to a counsellor after 2 years of being on a waiting list and after suffering with severe depression for many years.  I talked to her on the phone an hour a week for 8 weeks (I did a blog post all about it here) and it was the best thing I did, it helped so so much and I will be forever grateful to her!

I've been journaling and drawing again and trying to learn to do digital drawing.

And in August, after about 4 years of planning and making and designing, I finally opened my Etsy shop Crystal Sparkly Dreams (link in bio) :-D  I have loads more to list on there, including all my handmade jewellery but so far it's going well. *I will talk fully about it soon, probably when I have a few more items listed and I'll be doing giveaways, competitions, discount codes etc for all my readers.  If you want to follow my shops progress, check out when new items will be listed on the shop etc, please follow the IG account Crystal Sparkly Dreams Shop

I also helped my mum open her Etsy shop in October Crafty Renegade Design again I still have LOADS to list because she has been busy making so many amazing and beautiful craft items but at least it's a start.

I have also really seen who my real friends are this year and had a couple of pleasant surprises as well as disappointments on that score!  But the ones that have been there, have been absolutely amazing, so supportive and I don't know how I'd have got through the year without them! ♥♥♥

I still have stuff to sort out, with my work and my depression/anxiety etc but at least I feel I've finally made a massive start for the first time in my life!

This year has been a very mixed bag of emotions, it's still a huge worry and I'm feeling very anxious of what's going to happen this year but all we can do is hope and look after each other and focus on what we CAN still do.

So until next time, Happy New Year and Stay Safe

7th Blog Birthday & Positivity Giveaway

"Happy birthday to you, Happy birthday to you, Happy birthday my little blog, Happy birthday to you"  Wahoo, Crystal Sparkly Dreams is now 7 years old today!!

And to celebrate, as always, it's time for a giveaway :-)

I recently stumbled on this great new website Soul Analyse that has the most beautiful selection of jewellery that is all inscribed with positive affirmations!  Such as 'You are enough' and 'You've got this'.  I decided straight away that I wanted the gorgeous silver 'I am strong' ring and I've been wearing it since it arrived several weeks ago.
I was so happy with the look and quality of the ring, that I thought it would make the perfect gift for a birthday giveaway and of course the winner will get to choose what inscription they would like.

As you guys know, mental health is something very important to me and to have an item like this that you can keep with you at all times with a positive, personal message on that you can read to yourself whenever you need a boost; I think is an amazing idea especially at the moment when we all need a little 'pick me up'.  So I hope you'll enjoy entering the giveaway and maybe winning one of these lovely rings for yourself or of course for a family member or friend to help cheer them up.

To enter, use the Rafflecoper widget below.  Please read all the T&Cs underneath and I can't wait to read your answers to my question.  Good luck :-)

Your MIND Matters

Hi everyone, I'm sorry it's been a while since my last post but I have been busy working on a really big project, (yes the same project that I've been hinting at occasionally for about the last two and half years!)  Well that's because it is FINALLY happening :-D And I can't wait to tell you all about it in my next post.  So look out for that.  It's been a very long process, a lot of work (understatement) and I am SO excited to finally share it with you all.

But for today, we're going back to something else that's very important to me, mental health awareness.  In my last blog post I spoke about my experience talking to a counsellor and about some of the charities and organisations that offer further support. One of them being the charity MIND.

I first met with a counsellor from MIND many years ago when I was referred to them by my GP and I saw someone for about 8 weekly sessions. For me personally, I didn't feel it help at the time, as the person I saw literally just listened but didn't give any advice, which is what I needed and why at first, I was reluctant to see a counsellor again this time around. But it just goes to prove, you can't go by one bad experience!

So, I just assumed that was all MIND had to offer.  Little did I know that 9 years later, the charity had been completely reorganised and now offered a whole host of new ways to help!

After hearing about MIND from my counsellor and then researching a little more, I was amazed at the amount and various types of support, and events that they can now help with and I really wanted to tell you guys all about it.

They can help with everything from housing issues and jobs, to training scheme, therapy, befriending schemes and even offer support groups like arts and crafts, or groups with like-minded people that can share their issues.  As well as various online events and groups to cater for the current situation!

You also have the opportunity to give something back and help them, because of course they are a charity and can only keep going by donations and public support!  Why not help with campaigning, become a member or spend some of your spare time volunteering and use your own experiences helping others!

Because every little helps and we all need that little extra help sometimes, especially at the moment in these crazy times.

You can find more information and phone numbers for your local MIND charity on their website HERE

I hope this helps xx
Until next time, Stay Happy and Stay Safe

Mental Healing - Counselling

Hi everyone, firstly I just wanted to say a particular hello and thank you, to all my new subscribers, as there's been quite a few of you since my last post.  I'm very grateful and thank you for joining my little space on the internet :-)

Ok, on with the post (sorry it's a long one).
Just over two years ago, I went to see my GP to ask if I could see a counsellor.  I'd been going through a pretty rough time and was struggling to cope with everything that was going on in my life - little did I realise what was to come over the following year would be so much worse - but even so, I was in need of help.  So she put my name down on the waiting list.  I was told it could be a while (understatement), and while I was waiting I would be sent to see a mental health practitioner to start off the process.

About a year later, yes a year, I finally had an appointment come through to see the MH practitioner.  She was really nice, very easy to talk to and helped in many ways.  She explained that the few sessions I had with her would be a temporary measure until I was able to see the main counsellor but at least it was someone to confide in to begin with.  After discussing with her how I was struggling to cope with my health condition and the constant pain I'm always in, she put me on another waiting list to go to a Pain Management course, which I wrote all about here after going on the course last November/December.

Then finally in April this year, I had a letter arrive telling me to call to make an appointment with a counsellor.  When I called, the receptionist explained that due to the lockdown, all appointments would be over the phone for the foreseeable, which I was quite happy with, as it meant I could sit in comfort in my own home and not have the effort of going out (which I struggle with, with my health condition).  And so finally a few weeks later in May, after waiting for just over 2 years, I had the first of my appointments, that were to carry on for the following 8 weeks!  I was able to choose the day and time that suited me best too, which was sooo helpful and found that early evening was the best time to be able to talk.
I wanted to make sure that I made the most out of all the sessions, so during the time I'd been waiting to talk to her, I wrote lists and notes for everything that I wanted to discuss.  I planned to talk about one or two issues each session (as there were so many), so that I knew I'd covered everything.  And thankfully that plan turned out well.

Each week, I would go up to my room just before 6pm, get my notes out, my notebook and a packet of much-needed tissues and of course a bottle of water, and sit there ready with my mobile.  We talked through each problem and about how to either resolve them or cope with them better and by the end of each hour-long session, we'd spend 5 minutes at the end just calming down and she would check with me that I was ok and tell me to try and relax for the rest of the evening.

I also found it incredibly helpful to jot down notes as she was giving me advice and tips.  Because my memory is terrible and I knew over time I'd forget something important.  So to have those little notes there to always be able to refer to, is priceless.  I was also able to write down all the websites she gave me to look at and contact details for various helplines etc, for future reference, (some of which I'll leave below).

But after all that, I expect what you actually want to know is, did it help!?  And the simple answer is, yes 1000%.  I have been struggling with so many past issues and traumas that have been happening to me throughout my life as well as recently and still every day, and to be able to finally talk fully, completely openly and confidentially about everything with someone, was just what I needed.

As my counsellor told me, it doesn't always work for everyone, but there are so many different ways to help with depression, anxiety, PTSD etc.  Going to my GP, even though it was a long while ago, was the best decision I made.  It was the start of my healing process, the start of helping me feel like 'me' again!

After each session, I felt like a weight had been lifted.  Like I'd finally dealt with the issue and could put it safely in a drawer in my mind and move on.  Sure there will always be triggers for my issues, but I have coping methods now, I don't feel as mixed up anymore.
Before I started talking to my counsellor, I saw myself as a damaged, traumatised, depressed mess.  Confused, stressed, anxious and I just couldn't cope with life, I didn't want to and at times, even felt like I couldn't go on, life's struggles were just too much and too hard.

I still struggle, I'm not 'cured' but now I can finally see myself as a capable woman, who's stronger than I was before.  Who can deal with life better, calmer and I feel so much more focused and clearer in my mind.  I can see a way forward now instead of just feeling dragged down by my past and current problems.  Those that tried to help me, I used to ignore and push away because nothing made sense, I felt such a mess, I couldn't process anything.  But now I've been able to openly talk to the important people in my life and explain what was going on in my head, explain and apologies for letting them down or not being there when they needed me and to properly thank them for trying to help.  My mum for one, has always been there for me, no matter what.  A tower of love of strength, trying her best to help me.  At last now I feel I can be there better for her too.  And hopefully, it can only get better from here on out.

I've been told that if I do feel I need to talk to a counsellor again in the future, just to go back to my GP, but hopefully I won't need too, and there are loads of organisations that can help and be there for support along the way.
One of them is MIND, an amazing charity.  But I'm going to talk all about them in my next blog post, to coincide with a little giveaway I'm doing.

Another website my counsellor advised me to look at was - getselfhelp.com This website is AMAZING, absolutely full of problem solving tips, self help advice and mental exercises to help during panic attacks etc.  A very long list of various mental health issues and ways to help deal with them, as well as loads of general professional advice and so much more.  It would take a week or more to get through all the information that's on there but it's most definitely well worth looking at.  One of my favourite self help exercises is called 'Flipping the Thought Coin'.  Especially great for when you're feeling anxious about something particular.  Flip your thoughts, and try and think of the opposite feelings.  Instead of something terrible could happen, flip it to, what if it all goes well for instance.
There are loads of great tips like this, that I will be doing posts on in the coming months, so I really hope they help.

To finish off (at last), here's a list of contact details for various help centres and agencies.  If anyone would like to contact me for further help, please DM me on Twitter @DaniJ72 or message me on Instagram @crystalsparklydreams and I will get back to you.

Hi everyone, Netflix has been a total saviour for me; on days when I'm feeling really ill, when I'm going through a rough patch of feeling really down or just when I manage to find 30 minutes to sit and need to relax!  There's a show for every need and every various mood I'm in.

So to start with just so that I don't repeat myself too much throughout this post.  I just want to put it out there that I am totally obsessed with all the shows I'm going to talk about, I absolutely love them!!
I have to start with my all time favourite, Stranger Things - If you haven't heard the hype about this show over the last few years, where have you been!  And more importantly, why are you not watched this already!?!  I'll admit the first episode verges on childish and seems more suited to the younger generation.  BUT, do not be fooled, this show is far from childlike and gets very intense - Season 2 episode 8!!  That's all I'm saying.  Definitely 100% give it a go if you haven't already.  You will thank me.

Another absolute favourite is The Umbrella Academy - Oh My Gosh what an amazing series, I cannot praise this enough!  So cool, So quirky and just awesome.  Season 1 has THE best final to any series I have ever watched, and that's saying something!  Also Claus, coolest character by far!

Chilling Adventures of Sabrina - Now this is kind of a 'marmite' show, you either like it, or you hate the idea of '90's kids show' Sabrina being turned into a dark Satan worshiper!  Personally, I think it's awesome and I absolutely love the revamp.  I enjoy the 'dark-side' references and the quirky characters.  If you're into anything remotely fantasy based with a fun twist, you'll probably going to like it.

YOU - Two words spring to mind straight away with this show; Sexy and Dangerous!!  I was fully enthralled right from the get go.  Joe's smouldering good looks, intellect and hopeful romantic intentions are enough to make you want to say 'I do' BUT, then there's the unfortunate sinister side of him, that he just can't help escaping.  It is very captivating, very steamy and VERY high on the shocks factor!!  I absolutely LOVE it.

Shadow Hunters - An ass-kicking fantasy with a brilliant, very good looking cast, very cool outfits and storylines that will keep you entertained for hours.  If you ever saw the amazing film Mortal Instruments (one of my favourites) or if you've read the books, you'll have a good idea what the series is based on.  I promise you, you will Not be disappointed!!

Sex Education - Yes it's rude and a little X rated, But it's also really funny and actually has a great storyline.  I've just finished season 2 and I already hope the next season will arrive soon.  Maybe not a show for the more reserved among us but it's a good laugh and relaxing to watch (if you're not easily embarrassed!)  And it has Gillian Anderson in (Scully from The X Files) I'm a fan :-D

The Colony - Set in the future, a wall divides the colonies while an alien race guides the government/army to keep their people in their place with strict rules and curfews.  It's very addictive, it stars Walking Dead's Sarah Wayne Callies, and is just very entertaining.  The only downside being, there are only two seasons and the follow up has not be released to the uk, boooo!!  But still worth watching I feel.

Insatiable - Ridiculously funny, outright shocking (I do love a good shock-factor) and at times, just plain crazy.  I love it!!  (Just to add, as a trigger warning, it does contain body image/food related issue) but it's dealt with a quite an amusing way, the main girl certainly has an interesting way of working out her issues!

Baby - If you're like me and you love to watch something with a bit of oomph and grit, this is for you.  I've been working my way through season 1 for the past week (now on season 2) and I can't get enough of it, totally obsessed!  Plus it has an awesome soundtrack!  I'm really excited to see where it goes.

Friends - An age-old classic that will fill you with every emotion, mostly happiness and laughter.  Need I say more!

I would love to tell you about more great shows but since I have 35, yes 35 on my list still to watch, I will definitely be updating this and doing a part two sometime in the future.
I hope you enjoyed this post.  Let me know in the comments if you already watch any of the shows I've mentioned, or if you start any after reading this, come back and tell me what you thought of it.

Until next time, Stay Happy
